Our office frequently treats muscular, skeletal, and neurological conditions. Chiropractic, acupuncture, and manual therapy have proven to be very effective for treating all of the following conditions listed below. For more questions regarding if we can help you, schedule your consultation with Dr. Shiau.

Back & Neck Pain

Back pain is the leading cause of disability world-wide. Low back pain can be caused by traumatic injury, overuse, arthritis, a herniated disc, sciatica, or other mechanisms that will lead to muscle spasms and joint stiffness. When the muscles spasm/ tighten, this causes the joint motion to be lost or restricted. This restricted spinal joint motion results in undue pressure on the surrounding muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. As certain muscles will be forced to overcompensate, this often leads to unexplainable soreness and a lack of mobility. To treat your back pain, we will use acupuncture, soft tissue therapy, and chiropractic adjustments to break the pain cycle and allow your body to return to its original functional form.
Disc Bulges & Herniations
Our spinal discs act as cushions or shock absorbers of the spine. However, with normal wear-and-tear the disc may develop a tear or bulge, causing excruciating pain. At DISC, we have spinal decompression and spinal traction equipment and technology aimed at reducing disc bulges and relieving pain.
Arthritis & Joint Pain
If you are seeking relief from your joint pain without the use of drugs, surgery, or injections, chiropractic medicine will help relieve painful joints. Dr. Shiau is trained in soft low force adjustments that will gently treat the soft tissue to stop muscle spasms and relieve tenderness. Traction and therapies are aimed at slowly stretching your joints and increasing the range of motion of painful joints.
Scoliosis
As experts in spinal care, chiropractors can detect and treat scoliosis effectively with corrective spinal adjustments, structural strengthening programs, and corrective rehabilitation. Treatments aim at providing relief to back and neck pain, and allow the spine to grow optimally during puberty.
Pregnancy-Related Back & Hip Pain
As pregnant women go through physical changes, they become prone to back pain, hip pain, feet pain, and overall body fatigue. Chiropractic care and acupuncture is a great effective way to alleviate pregnancy-related pains without medications. Dr. Shiau is trained in Webster Technique, which aims at optimizing the position of the mother’s pelvis, hips, and low back to allow easy delivery and reduce pain. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help decrease labor time and alleviate delivery aches. Even after delivery, it is important to maintain consistent treatments to ensure your body recovers well. During breast-feeding, the mother’s body will be at excess stress as she will be frequently rounded into forward flexion and cause undue strain on the back, neck, and shoulders.
Headaches & Migraines

Migraines affect over 12 percent of people worldwide. These can be effectively reduced and even avoided with the right treatment and therapies. Having a migraine can be severely debilitating and can cause you to be shut-in a dark, quiet room entirely. Even though headaches are “common,” it is not “normal” to have them. Headaches result from excessive strain on the nervous system, which can be relieved by chiropractic treatments. Combined with acupuncture and soft-tissue therapy, chiropractic treatment helps remove pressure on the nerves, resulting in less headaches and lower severity of symptoms like light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sound irritability.
Nerve Pain & Sciatica

Radicular symptoms and pain that travel down the extremities (arms or legs) can be alleviated with spinal adjustments, soft-tissue therapy, acupuncture, and spinal decompression/traction. Typically, nerve pain presents as persistent pain down the arm or leg that traces a specific pathway.
Chronic Pain & Fibromyalgia
These systemic conditions can be frustrating to deal with as they tend to be overlooked in the medical field. Acupuncture and consistent chiropractic treatment has been proven to effectively manage symptoms. Widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, mood issues, sleep issues, and memory loss can all be effectively curbed with treatments.
Injuries

Auto Accidents, Personal Injury & Work Injuries
At DISC, we are trained and equipped to assist you on your injury recovery, whether it is from a motor vehicle accident or work injury. Injuries of this nature can be extremely debilitating and can cause you to miss significant time at work and doing things you love the most. Our goal is to get you functioning optimally as quickly as possible, without the use of drugs, surgery, or injections.
Sports Injuries (Strains & Sprains)
A sprain occurs when ligaments tear (example: ankle sprain). Ligaments are tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect two bones together to form a joint. A strain occurs when the muscles or the bands of tissue that attach a muscle to a bone (tendon) are injured and torn (example: hamstring strain). At DISC, we have technology and rehabilitation equipment that is aimed at healing sprains and strains. This includes ultrasonic wave therapy, moist heat therapy, cryotherapy, and laser therapy.
Post-Surgical Pain & Soreness
Back surgery fails 50 percent of the time. Chiropractic care helps alleviate post-surgical pain and ensures that your body recovers with the proper rehabilitation it needs. Development of scar tissue and tight muscles may also occur after surgery. This can be effectively treated with acupuncture and soft-tissue mobilization techniques like Graston or Myofascial Release Technique.
Tendonitis & Overuse Injuries
Overuse injuries can be painful and affect your activities of daily living and work. Overuse of repetitive motions will flare up inflammation of the tendons, ligaments, and muscles, leading to muscle pain and weakness and the inability to perform basic tasks.
Extremity Pain

Hip, Knee & Foot Pain
Conditions of the lower extremity we frequently treat include: Plantar fasciitis, shin splints, hip bursitis, knee pain, knee osteoarthritis, piriformis syndrome, ankle sprains, and hip pain. Hip bursitis occurs when the fluid-filled sac (bursa) is constantly irritated, leading to chronic inflammation and point tenderness over the hip region. When the lower extremity is affected, a chain reaction occurs traveling up the spine, causing hip and eventually back pain.
Shoulder, Elbow & Wrist Pain
Chiropractors treat extremity complaints in addition to spinal conditions. Rotator cuff pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, and other forms of upper extremity pain can be significantly reduced with treatment.
Other Conditions

Postural Abnormalities
Good posture, also known as a neutral spine, helps optimize your body’s position during everyday activities. When you experience back pain, neck pain, or shoulder pain, oftentimes a correction of your body’s posture through chiropractic adjustments can help realign the spine. After the adjustment, you may feel your chest open up more, your shoulders are rounded forward less, and your head is carried with lighter strain on your neck. For every inch your head translates forward past the shoulders, this adds an extra 10 pounds of stress on your neck.
Muscle Spasms & Joint Stiffness
Dr. Shiau specializes in soft-tissue therapy such as cupping therapy, dry-needling, myofascial release technique, pin-and-stretch, Graston and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization.
Jaw & TMJD Pain
Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture is quite effective in relieving the pain associated with the TMJ (jaw joint). The soft-tissue treatments and acupuncture help to relax your jaw muscles. The adjustment will move your jaw joints, and the soft-tissue trigger point therapy can precisely reposition your jaw. Jaw joint motion can be restored and the symptoms of TMJD (ear pain, clicking, locking jaw, headaches, neck pain, muscle soreness, painful chewing) can be alleviated significantly.
